The Lucid Dreaming — Learn to Lucid Dream

MILD: intention plus dream awareness

MILD uses prospective memory: remembering to remember something later. In this case, the future action is realizing that you are dreaming.

Why MILD is often recommended

MILD is not just a mantra. It rehearses a future mental action: noticing that you are dreaming. That prospective-memory framing is one reason it appears so often in beginner-friendly protocols.

Results usually improve when dream recall is already decent, the imagined scene is concrete, and you can fall back asleep without forcing the technique into insomnia.

How to practice

Before sleep or after a short WBTB awakening, recall a recent dream. Reimagine the moment where you notice something strange and realize it is a dream.

A useful phrase is, "Next time I am dreaming, I will remember that I am dreaming." The quality of intention matters more than counting repetitions.

A clear practice loop

  • • Bring back a recent dream or a likely dream scene from your journal.
  • • Notice what makes the scene dreamlike.
  • • Imagine becoming lucid there and responding calmly.
  • • Return to sleep while holding the intention lightly.

Useful tips

  • • Use scenes from your own dream journal whenever possible.
  • • Do not turn MILD into a fight against insomnia.
  • • Support the same skill during the day with reality checks.
  • • A short high-quality rehearsal is better than a long anxious one.

How to practice this in Lucider

Pull scenes and dream signs from your journal so MILD uses your own dream material instead of generic imagery.

Pair bedtime intentions with daytime reality-check reminders and, when sleep allows, a gentle WBTB window.

Research notes

  1. Tan et al., 2023 — Concluded that MILD had the strongest support among recent induction techniques reviewed.
  2. Aspy et al., 2020 — Found MILD effective across participants with different prior lucid dreaming experience.

Keep intention visible

Use Lucider to connect dream-journal scenes, reminders, and night plans so MILD stays concrete instead of abstract.
